A few weeks ago, I walked 60 miles in 3 days to raise money for breast cancer research. I signed up and decided to start a team, not knowing if anyone else would join me or not. All I knew was that I had to do something that was in my control to take charge of the control breast cancer has in my life. I signed up, was joined by some incredible women, and experienced the most powerful and impactful three days I could ever have imagined. I have been struggling to put it all into words because I don’t think words can do it justice.
It was impactful. The San Diego event raised over 5 million dollars towards breast cancer research. THANK YOU for supporting me in my fundraising efforts and in supporting those who walked with me and needed your help. Mostly, thank you for helping to put an end to breast cancer.
It was moving. We walked alongside a 91-year-old widower who lost his wife to breast cancer and countless others who lost or knew those who have fought they love. We had the honor of walking by a husband who directed us to say hello to his 1-month survivor wife, who was waving from behind their living room window, and we cheered and shared in her joy. We walked by a weeping man holding the urn of his wife, who had passed recently to this awful disease.
It was hard. 60 miles is no joke. But you have thousands of other men and women there to walk alongside you. Everyone moved at their own pace and waited for you at the end of each day.
It was FUN! More than anything, it really was fun. It was the kindest and most supportive environment that I have ever experienced.
Even though we were all EXHAUSTED by the time we crossed the finish line on the final day, we actually SIGNED UP TO DO IT AGAIN.
You heard right. As soon as we finished, we all signed up again.
I plan to walk every year that I am lucky and healthy enough to be able to physically walk.
